Mastering Our Gut, Sleep, and Circadian Rhythms for Peak Wellbeing
Our Inner Ecosystem, Sleep- Restful Slumber, and Circadian Rhythm Biological Clocks to Unlock Unprecedented Health and Vitality
Welcome GutSphere Friends,
“As the founder of GutSphere, I felt it necessary to address you directly, because our upcoming Newsletter series is born from a deeply personal conundrum and curiosity that has transformed my life. This story not only shed light on an unexpected connection between two seemingly unrelated aspects of my life but also led to discoveries that might change your perspective on something as fundamental as sleep.
Before we delve into the depths of this journey, let's start at the beginning and share with you the behind the scene story about why we are writing the sleep.
Why am I writing about sleep?
Sleep is a natural part of being an animal. All animals sleep - at least, I'm yet to see one that doesn't. But in our modern society, sleep has become complicated. Many successful people - like Elon Musk, who claims to function optimally on six hours or less of sleep, and Shah Rukh Khan, the Indian superstar who sleeps only five hours a day - seem to view sleep as a waste of time. India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, once said, "Aaram Haram Hai," which means, "Rest is rust." Sadhguru, a respected Indian guru, argues that our bodies need rest, not sleep, which can come in various forms. He claimed that he slept only 3 hours or less for decades. I respect all of these figures, and they are my role models in many ways. So, I tried to emulate their sleep habits, but I soon realized that it came at a cost.
Firstly, there are people who need less sleep - they are the anomalies. Extremely successful people often have these kinds of advantages. They have capitalized on their potential and turned it into success, which is something I deeply respect. However, I also had to acknowledge the scientific reality that my body is different from theirs.
Honestly, I envied those who could function with less sleep, like my friend who seems fully rested after just five hours of sleep or a quick power nap. I had a colleague who slept just five hours a day and performed her job perfectly fine. But I'm different. I need at least 7.5 hours of sleep.
I also began to notice a link between my sleep habits and gut issues, which I've struggled with since childhood. It wasn't until I started recording my bowel movements and correlating them with my sleep cycle that I realized there was a connection.
I know correlation isn't causation, so I set out to understand the cause. I read many books, articles, and research papers and listened to numerous podcasts. The books that helped me the most were 'The Good Gut' by Justin Sonnenburg, 'Why We Sleep' by Matthew Walker, and 'The Circadian Code' by Sachin Panda.
These resources helped me understand the cause-and-effect relationship between sleep and gut issues. Poor sleep is linked with diseases and gut dysbiosis, and vice versa. It was mind-blowing to realize that this could be a circular relationship, so I decided to share what I've learned in this newsletter series.
For me, the key is not feeling guilty about needing to sleep, but about making the waking hours matter. If I can do four hours of deep work, it's more valuable than 40 hours of distracted work. This shift in perspective changed my view on sleep, allowing me to rest my mind and prepare for deep work.
As we embark on this series together, my goal is to help you understand that sleep, often misunderstood and neglected, is normal and necessary. In our modern life, consciously designing our sleep habits isn't just important, it's crucial.
That's why I'm writing about sleep. To shed light on its underestimated power and its profound impact on our health. Join me on this journey of understanding sleep and let's redefine our relationship with it, one night at a time."
